When I walked into the new Triangle Community Church last week I was completely overwhelmed.
It was amazing to see the beautiful stained glass windows and the light and airy feel of the Church made me gasp. How different the building is in this modern age from the Delph Hill I remember when I was growing up. It was as if someone had taken me through the wardrobe into another world!
However the old Delph Hill of the 1950’s and 60’s has many happy memories for me. My parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles spent many happy times at Delph Hill. The Church filled practically every part of our lives from the social to the religious. As a family we were involved in everything from Bazaars, Concerts, Choir, Rose Queens, Youth Club, Sermons, Sunday School and Church.
As children we graduated from the Beginners to the Primary and then to the Sunday School (which filled the entire Hall) and on to the Youth Group. The Sunday Youth Group was very active and we had many topical discussions about every day matters. We were encouraged to grow and develop as young people and to express our point of view which was a relatively new thing to do for youngsters in the 1950’s/60’s.
The highlight of my week as I became a teenager was the Youth Club where we danced, we called it ‘bopping’, to all our favourite records and if you were lucky you might meet someone to go out with on a date. With my friends we toured the youth clubs in the area and when I met Stuart at the age of 15 I said goodbye to Delph Hill and emigrated to Chorley Old Road! Happy Days!!!!!
