Service Review: Christmas Service

What a wonderful turn out for our Christmas service. The service started with the lighting of the final candle in the advent ring the tallest, white one proclaiming that the light of the world came down for us again this Christmas time.

This was followed with ‘See amid the winter snow’. Ben followed with inspiring prayers taking as his source the Old Testament and the profits predictions.

Then it was family time admiring the Christmas jumpers, flashing bow ties funny seasonal hats and angels’ wings then sharing the joy of presents that had been received, we had a very diverse selection from yo-yo, toy washing machine, books, calendars, jewellery new clothes and one item that we had to help decide what it was!!! Our second reading was from Luke 2 1-20 read by Astley and Robin Jones whose voices beautifully complemented one another.

Then back to presents, Hilary had brought five wrapped boxes and invited someone to come and open them – the first contained a doll representing the baby Jesus, the second a copy of Hello magazine reminding us that he did not come to the rich or famous but was born humbly to Mary and Joseph.

We then joyfully sang ‘Come and join the celebrations’. The third box contained hay – representing the lowly manger and the fourth a lamb, reminding us that God chose that his birth should first be revealed to shepherds, despised living outside on the periphery of society.

The fifth presents for a baby, a baby grow, a dummy, toy and teddy, no, Jesus received Gold Frankincense and Myrrh, indications of what lay ahead. After the collection that is going to ‘Action for Children’ Hilary gave out gold coins to everyone as a gift from God – what do we do with the gifts we receive from God – throw it away – put it on one side and forget about it or accept it wholeheartedly. The choice is yours.

Like all good birthday parties there was a cake and a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday, as we were then in good voice we closed singing all the verses of ‘O come all ye w faithful’ I cannot finish this review without mentioning the AV team the images shown both yesterday and today were truly wonderful. Thank you.
