Service Review: 4th December

We were welcomed into the service with the sight of a beautiful Christmas Tree thank you to those who have decorated it for everyone’s pleasure.

The service started by Joe Farris & Glennys Astley with advent words the lighting of the second candle on our advent ring. This was followed with a multilingual greeting from our Minster Hilary. And a rousing rendition of ‘Tell out my soul.'

Dennis then introduced Mandy from Bolton Lions who had come to receive our gifts of Toys for their Christmas Appeal.

What generous members we have lots of toys from children and adults were placed around the foot of the Christmas tree. Mandy explained that they are hoping to distribute 1300 bags of toys and we were presented with a certificate recognizing our contribution. Hilary was then able to present a cheque for £700 to Sam Bagley from Urban Outreach towards their Christmas dinner with Jesus appeal. This was the profit from the Tony Vino concert held in October.

It was a morning of ‘giving’ Hilary explained that there were Hope Magazines for all the adults Jesus birthday balloons for the younger children and wrist bands for the older ones. There was also a heavenly host of Angels that had been made by the knit and natter group, to be taken and distributed were ever anyone could think of bringing to the community the message that ‘love came down at Christmas.’

After joining together in Holy Communion the young people went out to junior church. This was followed by ‘O come O come Emmanuel; We then had the reading Mathew 3 v 1-12. When John the Baptist talks of preparing the way. for the king. Hilary then asked if we ‘were ready for Christmas’ not the secular preparations that everyone is so busy with but are we prepared for Christ coming? The word Prepare in Hebrew means to clear out, are we ready to clear out what is keeping us from God? Can we confess – readily admit specifically any wrong doings and short comings? Then take confession to the next level and repent? Will we be repeat offenders or are we ready for a change of heart/behavior/habit? Ready for Christs coming and allow the Holy Spirit into our hearts.

The singing of ‘Hills of the North rejoice’ followed and then the rededication of our two Worship Leaders. Brian Smith and Denis Kirkham.

After a very full and moving service we finished with ‘I cannot tell’ to the tune Danny boy (which is one of my favorites)
