Service Review: 29th January 2017

Today's service saw the very welcome return of Mrs. Olwen Baker, to lead us in worship. Our opening hymn was No 340 in Singing the faith, "Ye servants of God."

Then Louise and Faustin, with their children, went to the front and shared the good news that Louise's sister's children, who had been missing, had been found in a refugee camp in the Tanzania. These children are orphans after the death of their mother.

Hymn 247: "Lord of the dance," followed before the children went to Junior Church.

Supported by Rev. Hilary, efforts are now being made to bring the children here to be cared for by Louise and Faustin. We were treated to a song of thanks, sung in Swahili, by Louise, Faustin and their children.

Olwen then invited all the children to go to the front and share a dinosaur puzzle, on the theme of "Working together."

The offertory was taken followed by Hymn 272. "From heaven you came."

The readings were:

  • Micah 6 v 1-8 read by Steve: The Lord s case against Israel.
  • Corinthians 1 1v 18- 31 read by Estelle: Christ crucified is God's power and wisdom.
  • Matthew 5 v 1-12 read by Olwen: The sermon on the Mount.

Olwen is a long-standing Circuit Steward, and as such she s been involved in the appointment of Methodist ministers. She showed us a copy of the official Code of Practice which has to be followed exactly in this process. The Beatitudes are the Code of Practice for us to live by, there are eight parts to read and consider and some of these seem to be opposites. We need to "think outside the box" when reading them. Following Jesus will not be easy and could be the opposite of what we anticipated. Basically we are selfish and greedy. If we fulfill the Beatitudes, Jesus says we will find happiness in Heaven, so we need to strengthen our faith by opening our code of practice: the Bible.

Prayers of Intersession followed, led by Brian.

Hymn 707: "Make me a channel of your peace" was the closing hymn, followed by the Benediction.

Ref: What you have done it unto the Lord I cannot Forget to me is that all the testimony. 2x

1. My life I give thee I serve
All you did it really do not have to pay
My life I give the Lord lead me
All you have done it unto the Lord I glory.

2. You keep me with the enemy, you have delivered me from suffering
Your loving saviour Jesus fail me
Thou hast delivered to the military, has been delivered to the rebels
What can I say I glory you in front of your Messiah?

3. Has wiped tears them trouble saviour Jesus
Thou hast brought up from sin and made me yours
What can I say I love you in front of your Messiah?

Kindly written by Mrs. Ruth Parker
