Advent 2014 was fast approaching and the New Initiative Group were reminded that unlike the previous few years we actually had a church that we could use whenever WE wanted to use it.
Ideas came thick and fast but we soon decided to do a ‘bring and share’ Christmas faith supper.
As 3 members of the Praise band were present at this NIG meeting it was decided that the Praise Band would lead the congregation in singing a number of Christmassy songs, both religious and secular to put us in a suitably festive spirit. As the evening approached we wondered just how many people would come to this new initiative, particularly as the Junior Church nativity had been performed so well in the morning and the children had had a visit from Father Christmas too. Plus the weather was so wet and miserable. But we needn’t have worried. As the doors opened soon after 5 o’clock, people streamed in, many thankfully bearing gifts of food.
So as David struck up the first chords of Come All Ye Faithful on the organ so began a great evening of music, food and fellowship. Whilst the Praise Band had rehearsed a number of items, the congregation – old and young – requested Christmas songs and hymns and the Praise Band did their best to play them – or David played them on the organ. Thanks to Brian for a reading from part of the Christmas story and for leading us in a few moments of prayer.
But all too soon the event was over and after another rousing sing of Come All Ye Faithful, the faithful made their way home, tired but happy, with a determination to do another similar event in the not too distant future.
Thanks to Margaret for organising the distribution of the food and keeping our tea and coffee cups replenished.
