First Friday Review: 1st May 2018

Steve Maslivec "All in the Mind": Steve gave us a glimpse into the huge subject of Mental Health in the Community.

Pluto in 300bc had words to say on it and we heard how the Victorians dealt with people who did not conform to the "norm", up to Steve's own personal meetings with Mental Health patients in his role as a Hospital Manager for the Greater Manchester Hospital Trust.

There are many kinds of mental health issues due to human nature or nurture, cultures and beliefs to name but a few and its affects all of us in one way or another.

There have been many myths about mental health down the ages but stigmas still remain, there is embarrassment and fear, and labels are attached to people who don't conform to today's standards. Bi-Polar, lunatic psychopath split-personality are some labels for people to fear and misunderstand.

It is difficult to know why people act as they do, how easily their mental balance can be tipped and many people ending up in prison and sometimes meeting Steve on his other role as a prison visitor.

There were people in the audience who have encountered treatment under the mental health Act of 1983 , one good result described to us all left us with hope.

We look forward to Steve's third visit when we can learn more about it being "all in the Mind " or not!!
