24 people came to listen to "Music and Words" from Jane Thompson, Geraldine Green and Astley Jones. And what a treat we were in for.
Astley introduced the pieces of music and gave a little bit of information about them. The first selection of Music played on the clarinet and accompanied by the piano was all about "Cats" written especially for the clarinet and piano, by John Noble ( nothing to do with Andrew Lloyd Webber) ---- "Allegro Pussicato," followed by "Tabbioso," "Cat Mandu" and lastly "Cotton Pickin".
While the girls caught their breath back. Astley gave us some information about Geraldine who plays the clarinet and cello with the Bolton Symphony Orchestra and is also a composer. Jane plays with the bassoon with the Blackburn Symphony Orchestra and also the piano.
The next piece was "Stranger on the Shore" when Gerry and Jane played duets on the clarinets, followed by Hector Berlioz Oratorio "The Childhood of Christ" putting us in the mood for Christmas, "Shepherd's Farewell", "Carol of the Bells" and "Coventry Carol".
To finish off the recital Jane and Gerry played a duet on the piano "Jingle Bells".
Margaret finished with a reading.
We concluded with a cup of tea and mince pies and cake and a couple of Christmas quizzes.
A very big thank you to Geraldine, Jane and Astley for a delightful hour of wonderful music and hope they will come again.
The next meeting will be on 5th January 2018 when Marjorie Blount will be talking on "An off-beat record".
Happy Christmas and New Year to everyone.
