Church Trip To Derbyshire

On Saturday 6th July, cloudy and rain in the air, 53 people from the Triangle set off by coach to Derbyshire arriving in time at Rowsey Railway Station for the 11.00am Peak Rail Steam Train.

Before we boarded, we had a drink and then set off taking us through the beautiful scenery of Derbyshire to Matlock which took about 30 minutes.

At Matlock we had had an hour and a half to discover the delights of the town and returned to the coach for 1.00pm to travel to Buxton. Still very overcast and light rain we travelled to Buxton and as we came North the clouds began to break and patches of blue sky appeared followed by the sun.

We arrived in Buxton where the Well Dressing was being completed before they were blessed on Sunday.

The blessing of the water supply, in the form of a well, is an ancient ceremony dating back to the Celts or even earlier. They are usually only found in or near Derbyshire.

Well Dressing is the art of decorating springs or wells with pictures made of natural products. Clay is pressed into boards, then the picture is traced onto the clay using a pointer. Then comes the delicate task of infilling with flower petals and other natural materials. Each petal has to be put in separately and they overlap like tiles on a roof so that rain will flow off the picture. This process takes many hours and usually occupies most of the week prior to the well-being dressed.

We spent just over two hours before returning to the coach where we could wander round and find the well dressing, have a cup of tea or some had a cream tea, before we returned to the coach to come back to Bolton.

The sun shone and we returned to the triangle for about 5.30pm tired but a very enjoyable day.

Thank you to Joyce and Bob for organising another wonderful day out, and we look forward to next year and another adventure???
